Radiology:

In addition to being this area’s expert on Rheumatoid Arthritis, and the pain associated with its related conditions, Dr. Hulon Crayton has taken his Arthritis and Infusion Center to new levels of excellence by increasing their RADIOLOGY services.

Patients can now receive the most current of diagnoses from the newest technology in Dexa scans (also called densitometry or DXA scans), used for bone density testing, which determines whether you have osteoporosis or are at risk for this condition before a break occurs. The test measures how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone, and is painless and non-invasive.

Who should have a bone density test? Women are at greater risk for osteoporosis. In fact, according to recent studies, one third of Caucasian women over 50 have osteoporosis, with nearly 80% remaining undiagnosed. After menopause, a woman’s risk of fracture increases to three times that of a man.

However, men should not be overlooked. More than 50% of people over the age of 55 are at increased risk of osteoporosis, and because men are less likely than women to be evaluated for osteoporosis, we have realized that low testosterone levels may indicate an increase in hip fractures. Through a simple blood test, testosterone levels can be measured and the appropriate replacement medicines prescribed.

The purchase of the FRAX® scanner ensures that our patients receive the most accurate tests available relating to the risk factors for fractures. This equipment is used to assess the strength of the bones and the probability of fracture in persons at risk for osteoporosis.

Ultrasound (also called sonography) screens are also offered, which is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. In our practice we use the musculoskeletal equipment that can help us diagnose tendon tears, like with a rotator cuff; bleeding within the muscles; early changes to rheumatoid arthritis; and dislocations to name just a few common uses. Ultrasounds are especially beneficial to patients who have Pacemakers and cannot, therefore, go through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Patients who suffer from claustrophobia brought on by closed MRIs will also appreciate this healthcare option.

The Arthritis and Infusion Center also offers Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) tests, which are used to detect signs of nerve injury. Symptoms that may alert you to the need for such a test are: numbness, tingling, and/or burning sensations. The NCV test measures the conducting function of nerves. This procedure is very helpful in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, and even muscular dystrophy.

Many, but not all, of our imaging procedures are covered by insurance. However, prior to a visit to The Arthritis and Infusion Center, it is a good idea to discuss any fees that may be associated with your medical imaging procedure.
